  • Overview

    The Director Transportation oversees the development and execution of long term strategic freight capacity planning, network carrier strategies and Carrier relationship management for all Marzetti transportation modes. Directly impacts the effective use of the transportation budget for Marzetti Logistics of $60 million. The position is required to lead: Inbound Raw Material movements, Inbound Finished Goods/Inventory transfer movements, TL shipments of manufactured goods from Marzetti Manufacturing plants and contracted Manufacturing plants inbound to Marzetti Distribution network. Additional responsibilities include management of 4+ direct reports, 20+ Indirect and the indirect oversight of the on-site contracted dedicated fleet personnel.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage business relationships with all transportation service providers with the goal of maximizing and leveraging the Marzetti freight portfolio for optimal service, cost, and security covering the inbound and outbound freight networks.
    • Monitor and manage the $60MM+ annual freight spend including tracking the contracted rate performance, and providing expense reports for all freight service types including: Truckload frozen, refer and dry, Intermodal, Private fleet, Contracted Dedicated Fleet, Backhaul Programs, and Less-Than-Truckload transportation services.
    • Responsible for Freight Network Optimization to include service provider selection recommendations, rate negotiation, carrier awards, and Transportation Management System (TMS) routing guide. As part of Network Optimization, he/she will oversee procurement events to achieve optimal Capacity, Service, and Rate and monitor compliance to routing guides and awards.
    • Identify expense reduction opportunities within the network through data analysis. Calculate spend savings/avoidance against the financial baselines of the Latest Best Estimate (LBE) forecast and the annual Freight Financial Plan budget and provide accurate financial summaries of savings initiatives to Transportation Group Manager.
    • Monitor and report freight industry market trends, regulatory and legislative activities that impact Marzetti's freight strategies, and economic and inflationary effects on freight rates and markets.
    • Understand and participate in the Freight Budget Forecasting processes and represent all Freight Modes to the Transportation Group Manager during preparation of the quarterly Latest Best Estimate and Annual Financial Plan budgetary preparation processes.
    • Develop an effective and cost conscious freight network of carrier partners that balances Asset and Broker providers, Frozen and Refer TL providers, Live and Drop trailer requirements of the Regional Distribution Centers, Inbound and Outbound carrier mix, Retail Customer “Must Arrive By Date” delivery requirements and food service delivery requirements
    • Monitor and report on relevant Regulatory and Legislative activities, as well as freight industry movements. Develop long range strategies for Marzetti to successfully adapt to the changing freight environment.

    Qualifications

    • BS degree in logistics or related field, MBA Preferred
    • 10-15 years’ experience in Logistics with a transportation provider, food manufacturer, or CPG company.
    • Prior Management experience to include P&L responsibilities, strategic planning, carrier portfolio management, negotiation skills, contracts and agreements
    • Competencies to include:
      • Analytical, budgeting & problem solving skills
      • Strong written and verbal communication
      • Ability to balance multiple priorities at once and manage time appropriately
      • Knowledge of carrier operations and pricing mechanics
      • Transportation contract development, negotiation, and execution
      • Intermediate-level skills with Word, Excel, and Power Point
      • Prior TMS (Transportation Management System) experience with a recognized platform
      • Experience with BI (Business Intelligence) reporting
      • Executing operations under time pressure or high-visibility

    Working Conditions/Environment

    Works in a normal office environment where the employee is regularly required to speak, see, hear, sit, stand, talk, type, walk and bend while moving about the facility. The noise level in the office is quiet. Occasional travel to plants or meetings is required.
