  • Overview

    The Packaging Engineer/Project Manager works with a cross functional team in the development of new, improved, and cost-reduced packaging. This position will strive for optimal packaging design from an operations, distribution and end user perspective. This position will act as one of the key packaging materials and equipment resources for the company and represent Marzetti externally with suppliers and customers.


    • Provides technical support to all business teams in the development of new packaging for the company.
    • Acts as project leader or key support to design, direct and implement packaging cost saving and sustainability projects. Evaluates new enhancements proposed to packaging materials, new proposed design and/or new equipment.
    • Supports the technical effort to develop and issue Packaging and Packaging Related specifications. This includes the managing of all packaging specifications types in company Specification System.
    • Fulfills the role as a technical service/troubleshooter when more generally defined packaging problems at our facilities are beyond the scope of the plant personnel.
    • Coordinate and execute packaging related experiments, as well as plant trials; prepare results in technical reports, both written and oral, for review with minimal supervision.
    • Develops new ideas for innovation which utilize new packaging technology in support of new business development opportunities.
    • Maintain awareness of technical trends and developments in the packaging industry.


    • Bachelors in Engineering, Packaging Science, or related field;
    • Minimum of 5 years work experience in food or packaging industry.
    • Solid understanding of packaging materials capabilities and equipment.
    • Knowledge and experience in packaging test methodology.
    • Knowledge of product development processes and commercialization processes.
    • Skilled in project management and communication.
    • Strong ability to collaborate and maintain cross-functional partnerships.
    • Strong analytical and logical problem solving abilities.

    Working Conditions/Environment

    Works in a laboratory and manufacturing environment where the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, crouch, reach and bend while moving about the facility. Requires some lifting of moderately heavy items such as test equipment and product cases. The noise level in the lab is moderate and loud in the plant. Hairnets, earplugs, goggles and gloves are required in accordance with GMP and safety standards.
