  • Overview

    Microbiologist I is an entry level position in microbiology, to support the testing programs needed by Quality Assurance departments at plants owned by T. Marzetti or co-packers 


    • Ability to follow detailed instructions (written and oral) and work independently
    • Ensures compliance to microbiological, food safety and HAACP support programs; assures conformity to all company, customer and government standards.
    • Organize samples from multiple facilities on daily basis and perform appropriate tests, be able to read, record and report results
    • Label, maintain testing samples for shelf life study testing and enable accurate reporting
    • Help maintain microbiology lab area and equipment in an orderly fashion
    • Reviews and provides communication and guidance to facilities regarding:
      • Sanitation, raw ingredient and final product results, with communication of problems to management personnel in a timely manner
      • The understanding and development of  FSP and HACCP plans including preventative controls programs
      • The microbial surveillance program appropriate for product and facility including advisement on equipment and plant sanitation.
    • Perform other tasks or projects as may be directed by Microbiology Manager or Food Safety Director


    • BS degree in microbiology, food science, or other similar science related field.
    • 1-3 yrs experience in food related Microbiology and / or Quality
    • Broad knowledge of food science (emphasis on microbiology, food safety, quality)
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including computer skills
    • Must be able to be self-motivated, dependable, participate in team tasks and proactively anticipate and address issues within the RD&Q department as well as other facilities.

    Working Conditions/Environment

    Works in a laboratory and manufacturing environment where the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, crouch, reach and bend while moving about the facility. Requires some lifting of moderately heavy items such as coolers and supplies. The noise level in the lab is moderate.  Hairnets, earplugs, goggles and gloves may be required in accordance with GMP and safety standards when visiting facilities.
